How to be a supportive peer

How can you become a more supportive and welcoming person in jazz? Regardless of how we all identify ourselves, there are little things we can do each day to make jazz spaces more comfortable and inviting to all.

Here are a few tips & tricks that we've found to be really helpful...

  • Be Inclusive | Are you hosting or heading to a session? What does the band look like? It's important to be aware of who you surround yourself with, and make sure you are providing opportunities to diversify the environment you are in.

  • Do Some Research! |  Can you list just 5 women in jazz that have made an impact on your life or in the jazz community as a whole? Our resources tab is a great way to get started!

  • Use Your Voice | Don't be afraid to use your voice and help others who may not have as strong of a voice as you do. Always do your best to be kind, considerate, and put yourself in someone else's shoes.
